System Requirements

You will need to install the following pre-requisites if you don’t already have them installed:
Mac OS X: Tun/Tap driver for Mac only
Windows: Microsoft .NET Framework (only required for Windows XP)
Linux and Mac OS X: Mono .NET Framework

Installation instructions

Windows

  • Extract archived file
  • Run setup.cmd (run as administrator, right-click on Windows Vista and Windows 7)
  • To start SocialVPN, run start_socialvpn (run as administrator, right-click on Windows Vista and Windows 7)
  • To stop SocialVPN, run stop_socialvpn (run as administrator, right-click on Windows Vista and Windows 7)

Linux and Mac

  • Install resolvconf and mono (see notes below)
  • Extract archived file
  • Run ./setup.sh
  • Run ./socialvpn (as root)

Mac OS X Warning – Current Mac OS X support is in alpha phases with some known issues

  • DNS settings need to be set manually
  • Running SocialVPN twice without rebooting causes kernel crash.

* Resolvconf is necessary to avoid overwriting the /etc/resolv.conf file in Linux. Resolvconf only works for Debian-based distributions, another option is OpenResolv. We are currently looking for a better solution.

User Interface

Just point your browser to http://127.0.0.1:58888/ to access the web interface. You can also utilize the “svpncmd.exe” tool to manage SocialVPN from the command line without a browser.

There is a one-time configuration step you need to go through before you access the Web user interface: you need to enter your Jabber ID (e.g. jabberid@host.com), a name to identify your computer (e.g. my-home-pc) and your name to configure the SocialVPN.

Issue Tracker

Your feedback is important to us, please help us by reporting all bugs to our Google Code issue tracker at http://code.google.com/p/socialvpn/issues/list.
